Radnor Regimental - History

Founded in 1919 as bespoke tailors and gown makers to Eton College, at 82 High Street, Eton after Mr. R.G. Radnor returned from the 1st World War.
The firm moved to 39 Thames Street in Windsor in 1929 where it remained for 75 years until 2004. Located opposite the “100 steps”, a private entrance for the Royal family, the firm became “under Royal patronage” and were the personal tailors to King George V1. During the 2nd World War the late King confided to his tailor many times when the war was troublesome and it was on June 6th 1944 that a very worried King, announced in confidence the news that D-Day had begun.
The Radnor family sold the business in 1983 to Gordon W. Rippington and Michael Wheatley-Ward
who immediately restored and upgraded the premises whilst retaining the unique character of this historic gentleman’s outfitters.
A mail order division was commenced in the late 1980’s to concentrate on the military accessory side of the business and this has grown steadily over the years.
In 2003 a new landlord who wanted to re-develop the building, made overtures to buy back the lease. With rent and rates in Windsor going through the roof, coupled with a badly design one way traffic system diverting customers away, the owners reluctantly agreed to close the shop down, but retained the mail order operation with the same personal service that has become a trademark.
